Meet Kavya Thalody

Behaviour Support Practitioner

Why were you drawn to studying Psychology?

I've always had a personal interest in learning about psychology and how our minds function. The ways in which our brains can differ is fascinating to me. Once noticing how the challenges that arise are often a result of interactions with our environment and those around us - this provided more room for me to learn about how to help people cope better.

What do you enjoy about your work, and what are you interested in or fascinated by?

I enjoy working with my clients and their support networks in an assistive role, getting to know them, understanding their strengths and needs, and problem-solving to effectively address the challenges they face. I'm interested in psychosocial disabilities and how the challenges they face can be improved by working within their social environment.

What drives you to show up for yourself and your clients in this role?

I hold a genuine passion for working in the mental health sector, and I am driven by the desire to make a positive impact on the lives of those I work with. I have a strong ethical compass and a high level of empathy for others. This role has allowed me to apply my desire to help others in a meaningful and practical way.

What have people said about your approach to this work?

I've been told I am very patient and understanding, and have an empathetic attitude in getting to know my client's and their specific needs. I have a warm, flexible, and gentle approach, and always try to ensure a safe and supportive environment for those seeking support. I have been commended for my intuitive approach to writing reports and my ability to advocate for people in complex situations.

  • I work from a Positive Behaviour Support model, and incorporate trauma-informed principles.

My approach to behavior support is holistic and person-centered - focusing on the specific difficulties that arise due to challenges in the client’s environment and addressing these through interventions that build capacity. I like to develop actionable strategies that address daily difficulties and challenging behaviors.

  • I have over a year of experience working in behaviour support and therapy implementation, with clients of varying backgrounds and presentations - including intellectual, developmental, and psychosocial disabilities. I have a personal interest in working with ASD, ADHD, and mental health such as anxiety disorders and related presentations. I have been recognised for my ability to write thoughtful behaviour support plans and reports for my clients.

  • Bachelor of Psychology with Honours from the University of New South Wales.
