Meet Bernard Leung

Behaviour Support Practitioner & Provisional Psychologist

Why were you drawn to studying Psychology?

I always knew I would pursue a career in a helping profession. And ever since I first learnt about a gentleman by the name of Sigmund Freud back in high school, I have known I wanted to study and become a psychologist. I have never stopped being fascinated by the mind, and I'm astounded by its complexity. There is so much to learn, and despite all the advancements in science and technology, there is still so much more to discover!

What do you enjoy about your work, and what are you interested in or fascinated by?

The best part of my job is...the people! It's something so obvious but we can often forget - everyone is living a life as vivid, rich and complex as your own. I am reminded of this every day by my clients. I consider it such a privilege to work with my clients, hear about their experiences and learn about their inner world. It highlights to me the diversity of human experience and, at the same time, the common threads that connect us all together.

What drives you to show up for yourself and your clients in this role?

I am driven to better myself every day because the more I develop as a psychologist, the better I can help and support my clients. It motivates me to keep learning, although the material is usually interesting enough that I don't really need it!

What have people said about your approach to this work?

My supervisors have been kind enough to say that I have a calm laid-back style that is warm and creates a safe space for clients to express themselves authentically - and that is something I aim for in every session.
